Knockout Shots by Jason Blade
The Beatles were right, all you need is love. Even though they wrote that song over 40 years ago and they weren’t talking about a certain TNA Knockout, those words should still ring true if you’re TNA management. It just so happens that the “love” in question is Angelina Love. And right now, Impact Wrestling needs her.
Ratings for Impact Wrestling have been on a slide lately, but it is believed by those within the company that the drop in ratings is a tolerable side effect as they restrucure their product and focus on pushing their young talent. Making new stars takes time and patience. It seems that TNA is willing to tolerate a short term drop in ratings if it means creating new stars that will (hopefully) pull those ratings higher six months or a year down the line. It’s not as worrisome a problem as it might appear; TNA is sacrificing the present for the future. But there is something troubling right now and I don’t think it can be chalked up to TNA’s new creative direction.
Since late 2007, TNA management has been able to count on at least one group of performers to pull a strong rating each and every week – the Knockouts. Almost from the very beginning, Knockouts matches and segments have virtually outdrawn everything else on Impact. No matter how low some male dominated segments drew, TNA could always count on the ladies to pull in strong numbers and bump up the overall rating of the show. Lately however, this has not been the case. Why not? What has changed?
I decided to delve in and do a little research to see if there was a cause for the drop off in ratings for the Knockouts as of late. I wanted to see if there was a consistent reason why some weeks were better than others and to see if there was something in particular that was making people tune in or out of the Knockouts portion of the show. I compared segment numbers from the past few years and looked for a link between the highs and lows. In the end, I found one, and her name is Angelina Love.
